Getting asked to work for massive product brands is one of the things that I really enjoy about my job. I actually still get nervous but once I’m over that initial feeling, I realise that it’s such a great opportunity. These kind of jobs are the reason I started my Barbering career 17 years ago ( Wow…that makes me feel old!!)
Babyliss contacted me about working on their stand, alongside my good mate Liam (@liamthebarber), for the launch of their brand new clipper at Barber Connect. If you haven’t been to Barber Connect, I suggest you get yourself tickets to the next one as its the biggest barbering event in the UK. Anyway, the plan was to take turns with Liam getting up on their stage and cutting hair using the new clipper. It can be a big task showcasing a tool or a product that you’ve never used before. In my job you get comfortable with your tools and you used to how they feel, the weight of them and how you set up your blades to suit your cutting technique. Who said being comfortable was good for you though??
We got a full briefing on the clipper prior to the show and we were sent the corded version of the clipper to use beforehand. I have to say, I was really impressed. One crazy thing about the show was that on the first day the clipper sold out in a couple of hours meaning that there aren’t any available in the UK again until their actual release in September.
The Babyliss Cordless Super Motor is as powerful as the corded version and there’s no snagging or slowing down from the motor as it cuts through the thickest head of hair. It’s like a knife through butter. The Lithium battery gives two hours of cutting time from a full charge (which takes 3 hours). I tend to put them straight back onto their charging stand as soon as I finish what I’m doing with them just to keep the battery topped up. On my recent visit to St George’s park to see my England clients, I did four haircuts using the Babyliss Cordless clipper and the performance remained consistent throughout all four cuts. I didn’t experience any loss in power even without charging the clipper between cuts.
One thing I really like about the clipper is the size and weight of it. I have massive hands and fingers so smaller clippers can sometimes feel lost in my hand. These clippers are a perfect size for me and the weight makes it feel solid and good quality.
Also, a good thing worth noting is that the Wahl clipper guards fit on to the blades of the Babyliss clipper so if you like to refine your cuts using a 0.5 or 1.5 guard they fit straight on without any problems. The notches on the tapering lever are another great touch, they are evenly spread in small increments making it easy to achieve a nice smooth fade.
I usually Zero gap my clippers but the guys at Babyliss said they wouldn’t recommend messing around with the setting on the blades so I’ve kept them as standard but I’ve not had any issues removing any lines at all.
When I started out as an apprentice barber all those years ago there was one clipper that everybody used, the Wahl Super Taper. I knew that clipper inside out. I could strip one down in a few minutes and fix any small problems that I ever got with it. This was actually part of my apprenticeship, stripping clippers down, cleaning them out, taking care of the blades then putting them back together and setting them up as the senior Barber wanted them. So you could say for the past 17 years I’ve been a Wahl guy. That was until last month when I received my Babyliss clippers. I’m not saying I’ll never use Wahl again, I’m just more than happy to add a new clipper to my set up and to be honest, I haven’t used anything else since Barber Connect.
If you are thinking about grabbing a Babyliss Cordless Super Motor when they come on sale is September then I’d say go for it. You definitely will not be disappointed.
