As you know, I’ve really been getting into my photography over the last few months and I was showing a client of mine some of my most recent shots that I’d had developed from my film camera a few weeks back. After seeing them, he asked me if I would shoot some pics of his daughter who is a dedicated boxer. Now, I am by no means an actual photographer but I feel like I’m finding my feet now, as far as having a good understanding of how the camera actually works, and I’ve definitely seen an improvement in my photos the last few times I’ve been out shooting.
I was nervous at the prospect of shooting pictures for somebody else though. Normally the subject I shoot is for my enjoyment and if others like what I do, then thats a bonus. I didn’t put too much pressure on myself though. This wasn’t a paid job so, if push came to shove and he didn’t like the photos, I could have recommended a photographer to reshoot the pics.
The shoot was in an old traditional boxing gym which was perfect. I’ve thought a few times I’d like to get some pictures relating to boxing and edit them to have a classic feel.
I took some basic soft box lighting with me and a black backdrop as I already had in my mind what I wanted to achieve from the shoot as Is planned it out before hand. I didn’t want to arrive unprepared.
The pictures turned out better than I imagined, the location was perfect, the lighting I took seemed to work really well and, as I mentioned, Orla knew exactly what to do.
Orla is only 14 but she is wise beyond her years. She understood what she wanted and what I was asking her to do in regards to positioning of the shots etc. which made the job easier and enjoyable. She is massively dedicated to her boxing and is also starting up her own social media and blog so keep and eye out for that as I’m sure it will be interesting to read. I think from watching her train, seeing her commitment to the sport and hearing the great things her Dad has to say about her, she will be a star in her sport and definitely one to watch!
Check out the last picture in this blog. Orla has an exciting project in the pipeline and I was lucky enough to get this sneak peek.
