2017 was a great year for me! My business grew more than I ever expected and I discovered that I actually have a massive love for photography. I bought myself a Canon M3 last year and spent most of the year shooting on that but in November, after a lot of reading and research, I decided to grab myself a full frame DSLR. It had to be a Canon 5D MK4. A few photographers I know use this camera and a lot of the photography I am into is generally shot using it.
Someone told me when I bought my first camera that it’s an expensive hobby, and if you really get into it you will constantly be looking at new kit. The 5d Mk4 isn’t a cheap option for a camera but, I figured, if I am going to get into this properly and produce the images I want to be producing then I should get the best camera that I can afford.
I can’t really pinpoint a particular type of photography that I’m into. I really enjoy portrait photography which is really useful as I enjoy taking pictures of the haircuts I do. I have recently been looking into ways of taking portrait photos to showcase my haircuts but also giving them a different look than a lot of the haircut pics you will see on social media.
I probably enjoy street photography the most but, unfortunately, this is a section that I haven’t had a lot of time to dabble in. I did get to spend a day down at London Men’s Fashion Week last January and I’m looking on hopefully getting down to London for a few more events this year to get more street style shots. I find it a bit intimidating getting street photos in Liverpool because I always end up bumping into people I know and get a bit self conscious.
I’ve been getting most of my practice and learning done by getting loads of Landscape outdoor shots. I feel relaxed being somewhere that isn’t rammed with people with too much going on. I find I can focus on getting my settings just right and frame a nice shot. This isn’t the type of photography I’d like to focus on most but I am learning well in these environments.
I have a few shoots and collaborations lined up for this year already so I will definitely keep working hard on my learning. I learn best in practical situations as opposed to reading so I constantly have my camera with me just incase I see something I’d like to shoot.
Here are some of my favourite images I’ve taken up to now. It will be interesting to look back in a few months and see how much I’ve progressed. Feel free to comment and let me know what you think of my images, and if you would like to collaborate definitely drop me a line.
