Do you ever have one of those moments, or days or just times in your life when you think? And I mean, like, loads?
I had a great week in work last week. I went to London twice and got to travel around a lot to see my customers on mobile work. When Saturday finally came, I finished work at about 10.30pm after a trip up to Manchester, and on the drive home I started thinking. Really thinking. I was thinking about how cool i find my job is, how good I feel my life is and how much I enjoy being engrossed in all my other projects, and I felt really good.
I felt full of appreciation and really didn’t want the day or the feeling to end. After getting home pretty late I sat down and talked with Jen for a bit and savoured the emotion. I actually felt like this all weekend. Amazing what a bit of reflection can do on a car journey home.
My weekend runs Sunday to Monday really, as I take Mondays off. This particular Monday morning, I woke up still full of beans which was strange because I had a dentist appointment at 10:15. Now, if you know me well, I don’t usually buzz about the dentist. The exact opposite to be honest. I’m bit of a fart when it comes to going to the dentist because a little experience years ago with an old dentist completely put me off going. I hadn’t been for 5 years which obviously made matters worse and I ended up needing two teeth extractions and two fillings. This was the last of the appointments though until my next check up so I was feeling confident. Keep up with your dentist appointments kids!!!
So, anyway, the dentist went well and on the way home I got my car cleaned and whilst watching them soap it up, I was off on that thinking train again. I was thinking that the last two years since I opened Cutthroatpete’s have been two of the best years of my life. I couldn’t ask for more. Everything felt perfect, but, I started to that think I really need to start making some time to do things outside of work. Its all well and good putting your heart and soul into your business but what about outside of that? I often fill my days off with travelling for work or appointments for customers that I can’t fit into my working days or faffing in the shop. I always do some sort of ‘work’ on my day off.
It was different nine years ago when I first met Jen. We would spend our days off together driving to random places. The sort of places people might not necessarily think of for a day out but the sense of adventure was great. We’d decide the night before or even on the morning of our day off and just drive. We’d be gone for hours. We’d always have a boss day and come home feeling really refreshed and clear minded. I have been craving that lately, not consciously but in the back of my mind. When you work so hard and put almost everything you have into your business, a day turns into a week which turns into a month and before you know it time has flown.
So I decided on Monday, a nice drive into Wales was what we needed to do. Jen was up for it too so we took a drive to Betws y Coed in North Wales with a stop at the super cool Rhug Organic Farm Shop on the way for a bite to eat. The drive along the A494 and A5 takes you past some gorgeous places. One of my favourites is the drive around the bottom of Moel Famou heading into Ruthin and the nice long straight stretches of road which form part of the A5 going into Betws y Coed. I’ve travelled this road countless times in different cars that I’ve owned over the years. Each car makes the experience different but I almost remember every bend and turn in the road.
Betws y Coed is two completely different places in Summer and in Winter. Summer makes this place buzz so much it gets jam packed with walkers/cyclists/outdoor enthusiasts but in winter it’s a really quiet and tranquil place. You can hear the fast flowing water shooting through rocks under the bridge and the browny orange colours of the trees and leaves create a great picture. It was exactly what I needed.
We parked up and went across to the river. The water at this time of year is really white because its flowing so fast. It’s a great place to sit and observe. I find watching the water so relaxing. It’s a cool place to be. I always imagine it’s what a skiing village would look like somewhere up in the alps. We got some great snaps by the water for the blog and great video footage. Since starting my blog and Youtube channel I am constantly looking for great photo/video opportunities.
There was an outdoor shop open for years in Betws Y Coed and it was always packed with the best walking and outdoor gear. As a kid, I would always imagine myself going there when I got older and buying myself stuff. Unfortunately, it looked as if this shop shut a few years ago and is now just a dilapidated building. Its sad to see that its gone. I wish places like this could do something to attract more people to the area during the winter months.
On our walk round the town, we wondered what it would be like to live in a remote place like the Snowdonia area. It would be so weird if you needed to just pop out and get yourself an outfit for an event or a decent haircut! Maybe people in these areas are brought up with a much simpler outlook on life. I almost feel like that’s why I love visiting these parts of Wales so much. It takes you away from the everyday City lifestyle we are used to and makes things much simpler.
I always feel refreshed after a nice day out. Maybe its the clean air, the fast flowing rivers, and the greenery. The locally sourced produce and simple lifestyle always make me feel like I’ve stepped away from my life for a day but always leaves me ready to return to what I know. I guess I am meant to live the lifestyle I lead because I always feel so fulfilled, but these days are a must every now and then. Our day had been perfect and that buzz I had going on inside was only heightened by our trip. It helped me take time to appreciate what I’ve got and the amazing people I have around me.
Anyway, you’ve probably read this and are now thinking, ‘Wow, that was deep’. I’ve done what I intended to though. I wanted to share with you how good I was feeling and how much I was appreciating my life last weekend! I don’t take a single day for granted. I work really hard and its good to take the time to reflect. I’ve got some really great events and trips coming up over the next few weeks that I’m really excited to tell you about so keep an eye open for them.
