So I decided back in September 2015 that it would be a good idea to open a second shop. This was a scary but massively exciting thought. Cutthroatpete’s Barber ‘Store’ was only 15months old but I was already turning away, on average, 10-15 new customers every day. I had to temporarily close my appointment book to make sure my current customers still received the same level of service I’d always prided myself on.
I was, and still am, adamant that Cutthroatpete’s Barber Store (my store) will always remain a one chair barber shop. I set out to open as a one chair shop and, as people who know me well know, I don’t go back on my ideas. Call me crazy but I believe that the days of a quick short back and sides have gone. Men want more from there grooming experts. They want to be pampered. The shop was a success and was constantly receiving positive feedback from clients commenting on how much they enjoyed the set up and felt totally relaxed in the environment. Adding more chairs to my shop was not an option.
I set out on a hunt for a new place, concentrating my search on the Baltic Triangle area of the city centre. A lot of trendy bars and cool independent businesses are opening up around the triangle. I reckon its going to be the place-to-be very soon.
After a few months of searching hard, I came across a row of brand new units under a newly built student accommodation block. I wanted the one right in the middle. It was a great industrial looking space and had a cool mezzanine level. I arranged a viewing and knew the space was perfect, so after some negotiation, I signed for the property and had set a moving in date. Cutthroatpetes Barber ‘Shop’ was born.
The next thing was to find the barbers to work at the shop and this was no easy task, especially in a city that could be more likened to a large village. In Liverpool, everyone knows everyone. I always think all good barbers will already be in a shop, it’s rare to find a good barber that’s out of a job. I had David Allan (CTP shop manager) in mind all along. We go years back. We actually met through a mutual friend and David became a customer of mine, but Ive always followed his work. Having a friendship with him also guaranteed that I could trust him 100%. He’s been in the industry for 8 years and has the same style and attitude that customers look for from the CTP brand. Not only an outstanding barber, but he’s professional, has the ability to make you feel like you’ve been mates for years and is never short of a footy conversation. Ill just have the turn my head at the fact he’s a red!
When looking for staff members to work for the Cutthroatpete brand, I wanted to make sure I had individuals that would fly the flag for me and be proud to be a part of my brand, and treat our customers with that extra special customer service that my brand prides itself on.
On May 7th 2016, we opened the shop and from day one the response was unreal. We had so much interest from passers by and on social media. All of those potential customers that I had to turn away from my store could now book in at Cutthroatpete’s Barber Shop and receive the same level of talent, professionalism and service. The aim of the ‘shop’ though was always to have more than one barber. I just thought we’d play it by ear and see how busy Day got at the beginning. After being open for about 3-4 weeks (!!) it was already getting to the stage where we were thinking about putting in a second chair.
Cue Jay! He has been a barber for as long as I have and I knew of him through mutual barbers in Liverpool. He had heard I was opening a second shop and came to speak to me about the possibility of working there. I couldn’t believe my luck, I knew Jay was a perfect fit for that second chair. He shares that massive passion for the trade that I have. His talent in mens grooming is outstanding and his experience has given him a very vast knowledge of styles and products. Aswell as this though, he’s a top lad. He’ll chat your ear off about all the latest fashion trends and the newest style of trainees that are out.
I’m lucky that these two great barbers were wanting to work for my brand and I could tell straight away that Day and Jay would be a boss team! They are both Liverpool fans but, i know, i know, we’re not all privileged in being brought up Blue 😉
Cutthroatpete’s Barber Shop, Jamaica St is now 8 months old and I haven’t looked back since the day we opened. The lads are getting rave reviews daily which makes me feel a massive sense of pride. I know the shop is in great hands and I look forward to working on some exciting projects in the very near future with my team.
